Transfer a License to a Client or New Owner

Change the license email on the plugin’s Account screen. Click Edit next to the email, enter the new owner’s address, and the new owner confirms by email within 4 hours. From then on, the license, its renewal emails and its invoices belong to that address.

Use this when you built a site for a client, sold a site, or bought with one email and want the license under another. It works the same for Football Leagues Premium, Sports Leagues Premium, Sports API Hub and Tennis API Hub. Moving the license to a different site is a separate task: see Move a License to Another Site.

πŸš€ How do I transfer the license?

  1. On a site where the license is active, open the plugin’s Account screen: Football Leagues > Account, Sports Leagues > Account, Sports API Hub > Account or Tennis API Hub > Account.
  2. Click Edit next to the Email row. The Email address update dialog opens.
  3. Type the new owner’s address under Enter the new email address.
  4. If the dialog asks Are both [old] and [new] your email addresses?, pick the answer that fits (see the next section).
  5. Click Update.
  6. The owner of the new address gets a confirmation email and must confirm within the next 4 hours. Ask your client to check their spam folder if it doesn’t arrive.

Which answer do I pick in the dialog?

It depends on who owns the new address. The dialog asks when that address already has a Freemius account:

AnswerPick it when
[new] is my client’s email addressYou’re handing the license to a client or a new site owner
[new] is my email addressThe new address is yours, and the old one isn’t (an old work address, say)
Yes – both addresses are mineYou use both addresses. The dialog then asks Would you like to merge [old] into [new]?: Yes – move all my data and assets moves every license under the old address, No – only move this site’s data moves only this one

What changes after the transfer?

  • The site keeps working. The change is about who owns the license, not where it runs. Nothing needs to be activated again.
  • The new owner signs in to the Freemius Customer Portal at users.freemius.com with the new address. The license, its sites and its invoices show up there.
  • The old address loses access. It no longer sees the license in the portal or gets its renewal emails.
  • Renewals: if the license is a subscription and your client should pay for it from now on, contact support for your plugin. We’ll help you set up the billing in their name.

Building sites for clients?

Transfer the license when you hand the site over, not later. Your client then gets the renewal reminders, and your inbox stops being the only way to reach their license.

I can’t use the Account screen. What now?

Contact support for your plugin. Write from the current license email and tell us the new owner’s address, and we’ll help you move the license over. The easiest route is still the Account screen, so if you can, activate the license on a site you can log in to first.

The confirmation email never cameCheck spam. The link is valid for 4 hours, so after that run the steps again
“Unexpected error, try again in 5 minutes”Wait 5 minutes and try again. If it keeps failing, the site may not reach Freemius: see License Won’t Activate
The new owner can’t sign in to the portalThey use the new address and the password reset link on the login form, since the account may be new to them
